News & opinions from a Palestinian-American
living & working in Ramallah/Al-Bireh, Palestine

Dear Friends,

There has been much talk about how Palestine has become dependent on donors. This is
true and a sad fact that is seriously hindering our ability as a community to decide the best
path of action that upholds our own community's interests. Reality today is that many donors,
like USAID, are defining a Palestinian developmental agenda (and political one too for that
matter), by benefiting from the political and economic despair that has been created by a 40-
yr, US-backed Israeli military occupation and a 60-yr, US-backed Israeli dispossession of
Palestinians.

Almost 2 years ago, several of us embarked on creating a new reality, one that is built on
Palestinians tapping their own resources with a clear aim of reducing donor dependence,
especially in the realm of civil society, which should be keeping the government in check.
We also view Palestinians as not ONLY being those that are living in the occupied areas, but
we view our people as a whole: some under occupation, some in Israel, a bulk in refugees
camps in the region, and many others in the Diaspora. Our aim is to put our communities to
work to serve themselves and we welcome your support.

To this end, we have established DALIA ASSOCIATION, Palestine's first Community
Foundation. Please take a minute to read our latest newsletter and, if you can, please make
a generous donation to our work by clicking the online donation link.

Focused on the strength of community,
Sam

Palestinians are the largest per capita recipients of international aid in
the world, but they have virtually no control over how resources are
used on their behalf. "With over 10 million Palestinians in the world,
and millions of international friends, it is time for Palestinians to
mobilize their own resources and use them for Palestinian-led social
change and sustainable development," announced the board of
directors of Dalia Association, a new Palestinian community
foundation based in Jerusalem.

When the Buckminster Fuller Institute in New York asked Dalia
Association to help find young Palestinians to attend their Design
Science Lab, a problem-solving workshop focused on poverty, it
seemed a perfect opportunity to put into practice our goal of "linking"
Palestinians with resources they can use to promote social change
and sustainable development, but our experience taught us that it is
MUCH more difficult to "link" than it appears.

Muthanna Al-Qadi wanted to contribute to Dalia Association, but
wasn't in a position to make a large financial contribution. He decided
to give what he could-his photos. You can see Muthanna's stunning
photographs capturing the essence of Palestinian humanity on Dalia
Association's website and in our brochure. We interviewed him about
his very generous contribution to Dalia in order to demonstrate the
many different and important ways one can become a donor.
