Berkeley Undergrad Sets Up Mini-Clinics<\/strong><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

May 22 – KGO – The commencement speaker for hundreds of students in the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley is a remarkable undergrad who came up with a concept that could revolutionize healthcare on a global level. He’s already put his plan to work in Palestine.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Two years ago, Daniel came up with a concept to treat and prevent diabetes in Palestine. His grandmother died in Bethlehem from complications of the disease.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: "There were restrictions on movement, tense political situation, and as I wanted to think about how we provide health care in this situation, I wanted to deal with this issue of diabetes and provide some kind of health care delivery system in the developing world."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

His plan was to create mini clinics in people’s homes or businesses, turning private spaces into public ones.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

He recruited volunteers in Palestine – doctors and nurses to educate the community about diabetes and about managing their own healthcare through what he named Micro-Clinics.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: "The Micro-Clinic is basically composed of three to six individuals and we give each Micro-Clinic a machine to share a glucose monitoring system."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

There are now 50 Micro-Clinics in and around Bethlehem and Daniel sees this as only the beginning. Berkeley’s Division of International Studies is launching a global Micro-Clinic fellowship program based on Daniel’s model.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Ananya Roy, Ph.D., associate dean & chair of Urban Studies: "There’s been interest in applying it to Afghanistan, particularly to post conflict societies, because partly what he’s building is not just an infrastructure of healthcare, but an infrastructure of peace."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: "What I intend to do is establish these programs for students not just at Berkeley but at every major university around the world."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Daniel heads to England’s Oxford University in the Fall as a prestigious Marshall scholar where he hopes to establish a fellowship program there – young man already making a world of difference.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Sam Bahour<\/strong> is a Palestinian-American business consultant, writer, and commentator based in Al-Bireh\/Ramallah, Palestine. He is the principal of Applied Information Management (AIM)<\/a>, a consultancy specializing in business development and startup advisory services.<\/p>\r\n

Bahour was instrumental in establishing two of Palestine\u2019s publicly traded companies: the Palestine Telecommunications Company (PALTEL) and the Arab Palestinian Shopping Centers (APSC). He co-founded Americans for a Vibrant Palestinian Economy (A4VPE), of which he is now an emeritus member, and served as an independent director on the board of Arab Islamic Bank P.L.C. from 2004 to 2025. He currently serves on the board of Just Vision<\/a> and The Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS)<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

He frequently gives talks to delegations visiting Palestine on the subjects of Palestine\u2019s political economy, Palestinian Politics 101, and a general orientation to the state of affairs under Israeli military occupation.<\/p>\r\n

A prolific writer on Palestinian affairs, Bahour has been published in major international outlets including The New York Times, The Guardian, Haaretz, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, Al Jazeera America, Le Monde diplomatique, Al-Monitor, +972 Magazine, The Hill, and Arab News. He has appeared as a commentator on NPR, CNN, BBC, and other broadcast media.<\/p>\r\n

Bahour is the co-editor of Homeland: Oral Histories of Palestine and Palestinians<\/a><\/em> (Olive Branch Press, 1993) and was profiled in the bestselling anthology Kingdom of Olives and Ash<\/a><\/em>, edited by Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, in a chapter authored by Chabon titled \u201cThe Tallest Man in Ramallah<\/a>.\u201d He holds an Associate\u2019s and Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Technology from Youngstown State University, and a Kellogg-Recanati International Executive MBA \u2014 a joint program of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Recanati Business School at Tel Aviv University.<\/p>\r\n
