He&#8217;s already put his plan to  work in Palestine.&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: &quot;As leaders we can break down the confining  barriers of insularity and hatred and guide into others into the freedom found in service.&quot;&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">For Daniel Zoughbie, giving the commencement address wraps up a remarkable career at  UC Berkeley&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Ananya Roy, Ph.D., associate dean &amp; chair of Urban Studies: &quot;He&#8217;s redefined what it means  to do well academically which is his ability to combine academics with public service.&quot;&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Two years ago, Daniel came up with a concept to treat and prevent diabetes in Palestine. His  grandmother died in Bethlehem from complications of the disease.&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: &quot;There were restrictions on movement, tense  political situation, and as I wanted to think about how we provide health care in this situation,  I wanted to deal with this issue of diabetes and provide some kind of health care delivery  system in the developing world.&quot;&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">His plan was to create mini clinics in people&#8217;s homes or businesses, turning private spaces  into public ones.&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">He recruited volunteers in Palestine &#8211; doctors and nurses to educate the community about  diabetes and about managing their own healthcare through what he named Micro-Clinics.&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">Daniel Zoughbie, Global Micro-Clinic founder: &quot;The Micro-Clinic is basically composed of  three to six individuals and we give each Micro-Clinic a machine to share a glucose  monitoring system.&quot;&#160; <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt\">There are now 50 Micro-Clinics in and around Bethlehem and Daniel sees this as only the  beginning. He co-founded Americans for a Vibrant Palestinian Economy (A4VPE), of which he is now an emeritus member, and served as an independent director on the board of Arab Islamic Bank P.L.C. from 2004 to 2025. He currently serves on the board of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justvision.org\/\">Just Vision<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mas.ps\">The Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS)<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He frequently gives talks to delegations visiting Palestine on the subjects of Palestine\u2019s political economy, Palestinian Politics 101, and a general orientation to the state of affairs under Israeli military occupation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prolific writer on Palestinian affairs, Bahour has been published in major international outlets including The New York Times, The Guardian, Haaretz, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, Al Jazeera America, Le Monde diplomatique, Al-Monitor, +972 Magazine, The Hill, and Arab News.
