Peres warns: Israel in danger of ceasing to exist as Jewish state  <\/strong><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

President says that Israel ‘doomed’ unless negotiations with the Palestinians leading to a peace agreement begin in the immediate future.  <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

President Shimon Peres is concerned that Israel might become a binational state, in which case, he warned, it would cease to exist as a Jewish state.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

"I’m concerned about the continued freeze [in the peace talks]," Peres said to people who visited him this week. "I’m concerned that Israel will become a binational state. What is happening now is total foot-dragging. We’re about to crash into the wall. We’re galloping at full speed toward a situation where Israel will cease to exist as a Jewish state."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Peres celebrated four years as president this week. He has three years to go until he decides on his next career move. But people who met him this week found the president’s mood far from festive. He prophesied that Israel would be doomed unless negotiations with the Palestinians leading to a peace agreement began in the immediate future.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

"Whoever accepts the basic principle of the 1967 lines will receive international support from the world," Peres said. "Whoever rejects it will lose the world." He was referring to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vehement objection to starting peace talks on the basis of the 1967 lines, which he called "indefensible" in both the Knesset and the U.S. Congress.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

But Peres continues to reject the advice of friends and various political figures that he come out openly against Netanyahu’s positions. "I’m not the head of the opposition, I’m the state president," he repeatedly tells them.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Peres also voiced fear that Israel might be subjected to economic boycotts and sanctions. There’s no need for boycotts," he said. "It would suffice for ports in Europe or Canada to stop unloading Israeli merchandise. It’s already beginning.  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

"September is only a date," he added, referring to Palestinian plans to seek UN recognition as a state then. "The question is what will happen before and after."  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Sam Bahour<\/strong> is a Palestinian-American business consultant, writer, and commentator based in Al-Bireh\/Ramallah, Palestine. He is the principal of Applied Information Management (AIM)<\/a>, a consultancy specializing in business development and startup advisory services.<\/p>\r\n

Bahour played a foundational role in establishing two of Palestine\u2019s publicly traded companies: the Palestine Telecommunications Company (PALTEL) and the Arab Palestinian Shopping Centers (APSC). He co-founded Americans for a Vibrant Palestinian Economy (A4VPE), of which he is now an emeritus member, and served as an independent director on the board of Arab Islamic Bank P.L.C. from 2004 to 2025. He has appeared as a commentator on NPR, CNN, BBC, and other broadcast media.<\/p>\r\n

Bahour is the co-editor of Homeland: Oral Histories of Palestine and Palestinians<\/a><\/em> (Olive Branch Press, 1993) and was profiled in the bestselling anthology Kingdom of Olives and Ash<\/a><\/em>, edited by Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, in a chapter authored by Chabon titled \u201cThe Tallest Man in Ramallah<\/a>.\u201d He holds an Associate\u2019s and Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Technology from Youngstown State University, and a Kellogg-Recanati International Executive MBA \u2014 a joint program of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Recanati Business School at Tel Aviv University.<\/p>\r\n
