\nclearly met by the same historic steadfastness that has come to identify our
\nplight during the last 50+ years.
\n<\/span>However, our determination today must be more sophisticated than that of
\nAl-Karameh in 1968, Beirut in 1982, or the 1987 Intifada. <\/span>Today, our efforts must consider the broader
\npicture and should not only confront Israeli tanks, gunships, assassinations,
\nclosures, etc. <\/span>With the same fervor,
\nthese same efforts must also view the latest Israeli aggression as a hiccup in
\nour national development. <\/span>It is
\nimperative to our national survival that we learn the lessons from the interim
\nphase of Oslo and readdress the weaknesses of our state building experience of
\nthe past 8 years. <\/span>If the Oslo Peace
\nAccords have given us anything, it is a taste of the paramount task ahead of us
\nin rebuilding Palestine from the ruins of Israeli Occupation.<\/p>\n
\nfeat. <\/span>The mindset and focus to look
\nbeyond the catastrophic damage being done to every aspect of our society should
\nnot only be an option, but also a duty that each citizen, official and leader
\nshould assume. <\/span>In this spirit, I would
\nlike to challenge a prevalent theme being repeated in every sector of our
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
\nbeing repeated over and over again in an effort to excuse what would be
\nconsidered by any other means sub-standard output to the utilization of scarce
\nresources including finances, time and human resources. <\/span>A case in point is our national development
\ndialogue. <\/span>Today, the issue of our mere
\nsurvival is being accepted as our sole guiding light. <\/span>In other words, what little strategic
\nnational infrastructure and institutional development that has crystallized to
\ndate is “Better than Nothing,” or so we are told. <\/span>If one ventures to question specific cases,
\nwhether the inquiry is about the same street being dug for the third time or
\nquestions the repeated strategic mistakes in dealing with building viable
\neconomic sectors, the answer, time and again, is, what you see is “Better
\nthan Nothing.” <\/span>Are we incapable of
\ndoing what we are doing right the first time so it will not need to be redone
\nin the near future? <\/span>Is it acceptable
\nthat we face our shortcomings with the calm, even culturally sounding,
\n“Better than Nothing?”<\/p>\n
\nNothing” attitude conveys the false belief that as long as we are
\nbreathing we are on the path to statehood.
\n<\/span>Worse yet, at the same time we are accepting this weak argument,<\/em>we are also
\ndemanding our natural<\/span> right among the nations of the world. <\/span>We want our plight as a country and a people
\nto be articulated to the world in the most effective way. <\/span>Among other things, we yearn for a free
\nmarket economy, world-class health care, modern infrastructure, and we expect
\nthe best education for our children.
\n<\/span>Despite all of our efforts, our demands continue to be thwarted. <\/span>The rule of law, a sound judiciary, institution
\nbuilding, democracy, transparency, accountability, regulation, and other
\nrelated principles, continue to find new and creative excuses for not truly
\nbeing at the forefront of our social, political and economic agendas.<\/p>\n
\nproductive today, even under the current situation, then we must approach each
\nand every one of our efforts with an urgency that will not allow us to settle
\nfor less than the greatest possible outcome.
\n<\/span>If an undertaking does not produce its
\nexpected value, then, it is money, time, thought, and today even human life
\nwasted and, most often, best not spent.
\n<\/span>Acting, for the mere sake of going through the motions, is a
\nprescription for Palestine to remain locked in a fatal domain of apathy.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nare rushing to join the “Better than Nothing” chorus in depicting
\nwhat our 50+ years of national sacrifice and struggle has achieved, thus far,
\nas a sufficient reward for our efforts.
\n<\/span>Let’s not give them the option.<\/p>\n
